Guest Post – Nan Reinhardt

Hi – I rarely have people as guests on my blog, not because I don’t want guests, but because it never occurs to me to ask people if they’d like to. Today, I do have a guest, fellow romance author, Nan Reinhardt. I met Nan through Lani Diane Rich and her blog, The Bettyverse. Now that I think about it, I’ve “known” Nan for a few years, and we’ve never met in person. That’s one of the great perks of the Internet. For introverts like me, it’s easy to make many friends all over the place.

Nan is here today to celebrate the release of her two books, Once More From the Top and Sex and the Widow Miles. Nan wrote the post today about her inspiration for Once More From the Top. Take it away, Nan 🙂

One Small Moment

I don’t know how many people know who Joe Brooks was, but he was a jingle writer and the composer who wrote “You Light Up My Life,” the song that made Debby Boone famous back in the 1970s. That was nice song, but it got overplayed, overused, and became almost banal before we got bored and moved on. But I remember Joe Brooks for an obscure, sappy movie he made and starred in called If Ever I See You Again. The acting was…not good, the premise rather silly and sophomoric, but in 1978, I went to see that movie six times in the few weeks it played in my town. I went all alone to the afternoon matinee. I never discussed it with anyone or invited anyone to come along—those afternoons in the dark theater were my epiphany as a romance writer.

I don’t know why that movie affected me the way it did. It wasn’t that Brooks was a good actor, he wasn’t—he was a song writer. It certainly wasn’t the storyline or the dialogue or even the beautiful California scenery. But something in Joe Brooks touched the writer in me. I’d set my fiction writing aside and was running an antiques business and writing articles for a local magazine. But the romance writing was there… waiting.

In the movie, when Brooks stood in front of the orchestra, conducting the title song—a love song he’d written for a woman he’d lost—his expression touched me and I knew I’d found the hero of my first novel. Now as it happens, that hero didn’t get written for another thirty years, but he floated in my subconscious—a conductor, tall and lanky and gentle and artistic.

Joe Brooks, circa 1978, was the inspiration for Liam, the symphony conductor hero in Once More From the Top. One five-minute scene in a film that the critics trashed became a seed that grew into the first book in the Women of Willow Bay series. One of the secondary characters in that book became the heroine of the second book in the series, Sex and the Widow Miles. And at least two more Willow Bay books are in the works.

You never know, do you, how odd little moments in life will affect you or set your creative juices flowing?

(Shannyn again — I don’t know about you, but I want to go find this movie and watch it now 🙂 )

Once More From the Top

What do you do when the one who got away… comes back?

Carrie Halligan never regretted the choice she made sixteen years ago to raise her son Jack by herself in Willow Bay, Michigan. A successful photographer by day, at night Carrie satisfies her musical passions by playing piano at a hotel bar, maintaining a balance that works for her and Jack. Walking away from Maestro Liam Reilly without telling him she was pregnant with his child may have been the hardest thing she’d ever done, but it was definitely the right thing.

When Liam shows up in town to perform a benefit concert with the local symphony, however, Carrie’s carefully crafted life spins out of control. After sending Jack to summer camp, she realizes she can’t keep Liam in the dark forever. Telling the truth to the man she once loved more than life itself isn’t near as hard as spending time in his presence and realizing that the years haven’t diminished his power over her heart. Will her lie be too much to get past, or will the spark of passion between them overcome everything?

About Nan

nan02Nan Reinhardt is a writer of romantic fiction for women in their prime. Yeah, women still fall in love and have sex, even after 45! Imagine! She is also a wife, a mom, a mother-in-law, and a grandmother. She’s been an antiques dealer, a bank teller, a stay-at-home mom, a secretary, and for the last 17 years, she’s earned her living as a freelance copyeditor and proofreader.

But writing is Nan’s first and most enduring passion. She can’t remember a time in her life when she wasn’t writing—she wrote her first romance novel at the age of ten, a love story between the most sophisticated person she knew at the time, her older sister (who was in high school and had a driver’s license!) and a member of Herman’s Hermits. If you remember who they are, you are Nan’s audience! She’s still writing romance, but now from the viewpoint of a wiser, slightly rumpled, menopausal woman who believes that love never ages, women only grow more interesting, and everybody needs a little sexy romance.

Her first novel Rule Number One is available at Amazon.com and Barnes&Noble.com. The other two, Once More From the Top and Sex and the Widow Miles — the first novels in the Women of Willow Bay series, are available exclusively at Amazon.

Just a small note from me (Shannyn) — If you’ve been reading my 8 Sentence Sunday posts, you might also be aware that Nan also participates and has posted from her books on a weekly basis. It’s a great way to sample someone’s writing. Trust me, if you read her samples, you’ll want to get the book. 🙂

Shannyn, thanks so much for having me today! I’m looking forward to talking to your followers! Unfortunately, the movie never made it to DVD and I think the only way to find it is to look for it on eBay or Amazon on VHS. My kid got it for me for my birthday not long after I wrote Once More From the Top–it was great to see it again!
