The other bit of promotion I did this past week, was Valentine’s Day Girls Night Out. I came up with the idea for this reader gathering months ago and began inviting other Chicago authors to join me. We ended up having a group of 7 contemporary authors who all live in or near Chicago and use the city as a setting in their books. I was really nervous about the event because not only did I come up with the idea and organize it (which means if it flopped, it was on me), but I was set to read with some truly phenomenal authors. Here’s who joined me: Julie James, Julie Ann Walker, Beth Kery, Jennifer Stevenson, Adrienne Giordano, and Kate Meader. The only person on that list who’s newer to publishing than me is Kate Meader because her book doesn’t come out until May.

We held the event at a Chicago bar (Sheffields) that does monthly literary events. The bar was great. They had one of their wine vendors do a free wine tasting and offer discounted bottles for everyone. I asked my chaptermate Ruth Kaufman to emcee the evening because she is a fabulous moderator.

We started the night with a fun little scavenger hunt where readers had to figure out which author wrote each book based on a one-line blurb. Then we each did a short reading and followed with a Q&A session. In between all of the activities, we gave away a ton of prizes. Our publishers were awesome and sent LOTS of books to give away.

Although I was a nervous wreck at the beginning of the evening, I ended up having a blast. My reading went well, as did all of the others. The readers seemed to have a great time. They were able to interact with all of us, get items signed, ask questions, you name it. By the time it was done, some of my fellow authors were joking about this becoming a quarterly event, and my editor suggested taking it to other cities. While it sounds a little crazy, I wouldn’t count any of that out.

What types of events do you like to attend as a reader? What makes it fun?
